VICTORIA WARD PARK

Victoria Ward Park is the thoughtfully designed centerpiece of Ward Village. Serving as a central gathering place for residents, visitors, and the local community, the park balances urban energy with natural serenity.

The 3.5-acre park is divided into two distinct areas. The newly opened 1.4-acre makai (oceanside) section is a tranquil retreat featuring rolling landscapes and native Hawaiian plants designed to increase biodiversity and reduce heat. Slated to open in early 2026, the mauka (mountain) side will feature play areas, shaded seating, and retail integration. Pedestrian-friendly paths weave through the park, strengthening connections between residences and retail spaces, while a new pedestrian bridge safely links both sections across Auahi Street and provides a vital connection to Ala Moana Beach Park.

Public art is at the heart of Victoria Ward Park, featuring large-scale sculptures that reflect Hawaiian ecology. “Wayfinding” by Linda Fleming greets guests at the makai entrance, evoking ocean currents and Polynesian navigation. Additionally, Dan Ostermiller’s “Ae‘o Birds” features bronze sculptures of Hawaiian stilts that once populated the area’s wetlands. These installations, along with an ‘auwai-inspired water feature, root the park in a distinct sense of place and honor Hawai‘i’s culture.

The mauka side of the park features two Hawaii-based artists, David Kuraoka and Hiroki Morinoue. Kuraoka’s colorful columns, “Mauka/Makai,” stand on Auahi Street to greet guests as they enter. Morinoue’s “Hawaii Fish Pond” is a glass mosaic tile installation that reflects the story of Victoria Ward and her seven daughters, referencing the ocean tides. Both artists focus on activating the space through the intentional use of color and materiality.

Victoria Ward Park demonstrates how thoughtful design can foster meaningful connections within a community.
